Baratza Encore ESP Review

Baratza has just recently announced their newest, most innovative coffee product yet: The Baratza Encore ESP. This new grinder is state of the art and according to Baratza’s website, is “a classic re-engineered for espresso from the inside out.”

The ESP is similar to the original Baratza Encore that we all know and love, but this grinder has a few fresh adjustments geared toward the at-home espresso lovers out there. We at French Press Coffee are huge fans of everything Baratza, but what do we really think about their latest invention?

Why We Love the New Baratza Encore ESP Grinder

There aren’t many negative things to say about the Baratza Encore grinder, and the same goes for the new Encore ESP. BAratza has done an excellent job as a company listening to their customers and has taken the customer’s needs into consideration with every single upgrade.

The ESP has all the things we love about the original Encore but with multiple innovations that make it an excellent at-home espresso grinder. One of the first features we noticed about the ESP is the new grind adjustment facility built into the grinder for precise, consistent grind every time.

While the Baratza Encore and the Baratza Encore ESP both have plenty of accurate grind settings to choose from, the ESP now has smaller, finer adjustment grind size options for those making espresso.

Baratza accomplished this by literally narrowing the space between each adjustment in the espresso settings. So while settings 21-40 are the same as they are in the original Encore, settings 1-20 are now smaller and even more precise. And for those who use an espresso maker, you know that precision is key when it comes to pulling the perfect shot.

This brings us to our next favorite feature: the 40mm M2 conical burrs. These burrs are different than the M3 burrs used in the original Encore in that they grind twice as fast. If you’ve ever used the Baratza Virtuoso grinder, then you’ve experienced the M2 burrs before.

And if you need to remove the cone burrs for any reason, like to unclog or clean the burrs or the grinder, they can be removed easily and quickly by just twisting and popping them out.

As we mentioned earlier, we love Baratza’s ability to constantly improve and innovate their designs. They did this again with the ESP, especially with their new anti-static dosing cup that fits on most standard portafilters.

This 54 mm dosing cup also comes with a 58 mm adapter. It’s anti-static, meaning you won’t leave any coffee grounds behind. And not only does this dosing cup help to keep your counter space clean by catching more grounds, it also helps with the actual espresso shot itself.

How, you may ask? Well, Baratza continues to work hard to learn as much as they can about how to make the best cup of coffee with the best coffee grinders, and something they know is that it’s better when your coffee grounds can be distributed evenly.

For example, if you stick the portafilter straight under the grinder, the grounds fall in a fairly concentrated area. If you use the dosing cup and then transfer to your portafilter, it mixes and distributes everything evenly.

And lastly, another pro of this Baratza grinder is its high-powered torque DC motor. The more powerful the motor, the better your overall coffee and espresso experience.

The Baratza Encore ESP has been designed and built with a powerful torque dc motor that will yield a high-quality, precise grind in a faster, less noisy way. The motor also comes with an automatic thermal cutoff switch, meaning you don’t have to worry about it ever overheating on you.

Is There Anything We Don’t Love about baratza encore ESP?

To be honest, no! Baratza products have proven time and time again to be some of the best on the market, and this ESP is no exception. It’s perfect for espresso lovers everywhere, and we are thrilled for this new release.

Should I Buy the Encore or the Encore ESP?

It’s pretty simple, depending on your favored brew methods at home. If you have an espresso machine and enjoy making espresso, we highly recommend the ESP! The ESP still has medium and coarse settings too, so you can switch between espresso, pour over, drip, etc.

If you don’t make espresso at home, stick to the Baratza Encore! You won’t need the extra-fine adjustments for things like pour overs, cold brew, french press, or drip coffee.
